Pipeline Network Optimization and Storage Tank Design

In combined sewer system, the pollutant concentration in rainy day is high, cause serious water pollution. Since the 1960s, reducing early rainwater pollutant in combined sewer system has become a hot issue. Constructing a storm tank in combined sewer systems is an effective measure to enhance the drainage capacity of rainwater system, and it can also effectively reduce the pollutant load of drainage system and protect the river. In separated systems, the early rainwater scouring lead to non-point source pollution is also a  primary issue affecting urban water quality.

In recent years, with increased attention to urban non-point source pollution, various regions have begun to explore the construction of new storage tanks to reduce the direct discharge of polluted rainwater into river. These tanks combined with pollutant removal functions like precipitation and skimming to reduce non-point source pollution loads.

Currently, whether in separated systems or combined sewer systems, constructing large rainwater or combined sewage storage tanks, or giant underground storage tunnels, is a common method for controlling stormwater runoff and combined sewage overflow pollution in many cities abroad. In China, Shanghai, Kunming, Hefei, Changchun, and Fuzhou have begun experimenting with storage tank construction. However, due to the lack of experience and scientific method guidance, it is difficult for some storage tanks to operate and achieve the expected results.

According to this issue, our institute, together with the German IKT Research Institute and DSP office, set up the topic of ‘Theoretical research and process development and improvement of New storage facilities’, and launched a project in the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.
