The urban drainage pipeline network system includes gravity or pressure pipeline networks, pumping stations and storage facilities, which assume the important functions of urban rainwater and sewage collection and treatment, and is an important municipal infrastructure to ensure the well-being of residents, the urban environment, and city safety. The safe and effective operation of the urban drainage pipeline network is also a key guarantee for the quality of the urban water environment. 

In recent years, China’s urban water environment pollution is still severe, and the problems in the operation of urban drainage pipeline network are increasingly prominent, seriously endangering human health and environmental health. The planning, design, simulation, monitoring, diagnosis, inspection, and repair of pipeline network systems are the core research fields of our institute. 

The research fields cover the most central and cutting-edge topics of pipeline networks around the world, including the input and characteristics of watershed pollutants, the transfer and evolution of pipeline networks pollution, sedimentation and scouring in pipelines, the input and evolution mechanisms of new pollutants such as PPCP, thermal energy utilization of pipeline sewage, pollution loads and environmental impacts of different drainage mechanisms, new drainage systems, sponge cities, ecological drainage, and rainwater reuse.
